SURVEY QUESTION TYPES

CONTEXT QUESTION TYPES

 Instruction text

This question type is not really a question because there are no answers to assign to it. Its sole purpose is to present respondents with some text. Use it to give respondents guidance about the survey, divide different survey parts, or deliver details about the subject of your research. It is often used to present positioning statements, or descriptions about a product or service, as a precursor to a question set. It has greater character limits than any other question type, which makes it perfect for testing text stimuli such as value propositions, product descriptions, or ad verbiage. You can use the bold (<b></b>) tag to make some words stand out. You can also use line breaks (<br>) to separate sentences, and insert URLs which will automatically be clickable. (Tooltip: Format your text in Microsoft Word, copy the text, then paste into the instructional text field.)

Instructional questions can have images associated with them which can be expanded to the full width of the survey widget, or appear as thumbnails and pop up as a reference on mouse rollover. Expanded illustrations are perfect when you want respondents to take a look at an image in conjunction with text. Attached (pop-up thumbnail) images are useful when you add them as reminders of an image respondents saw earlier in the survey.

Instruction questions can have skip logic destinations. Use the rabbit icon to program this logic.

Respondents will be able to read your text and move forward at any time.

 Image – illustration question type

The sole purpose of image question types is to present respondents with an image and assure proper exposure to it. You can upload any of the following file types: JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, AI, EPS, PDF -- up to 10 Mb.

You can assign skip logic or random skip logic to image question types by clicking on the adjacent rabbit icons to program this logic.

A caption for the image can be added in the question field and is required to launch a survey.

Special settings for this question include:

  • Force fullscreen. By default, respondents will see the image fit the width of the survey widget. If your image contains small details and you need respondents to see it as large as possible, check this option. It will open the image in a "light box", occupying as much room as the screen allows. Make sure to upload a high resolution image (up to 3,000 pixels wide), otherwise it might be too small to stretch on higher resolution monitors without pixelation or distortion. Please note: you must be registered and logged in to upload images.
  • Auto advance. When the 'Force fullscreen' option is on, you'll see a second control allowing you to auto advance the respondent after a chosen amount of time in the drop down menu. By default it's OFF, but you can choose from 3 seconds to 1 minute before the image will be automatically closed and the respondent directed to the next question. Use this feature to mimic a shopping environment, where consumers typically spend only a few seconds looking at products and packages before they make a decision. Another option is showing an advertisement for a brief amount of time, then testing level of recall, i.e. "What do you remember about that ad?" Use the "Never" setting to allow respondents to study the image for as long as they like before moving on to the next question.

 Video clip

Video clips are a simple way to upload the video commercials you need to test, provide survey context by uploading a presentation with voice over, or record a quick introduction as well as instructions for the survey using your own webcam. Please note: you must be registered and logged in to upload a video clip.

Please keep your video clips under 450 seconds (7 minutes and 30 seconds). You can upload different video file formats, but mp4 is the preferred format to use. If you have difficulties with other formats, please convert your file to mp4 then upload it.

Please keep the page open while your video file is uploading. When the upload is complete, please wait for a confirmation to be displayed on the page. We automatically convert your video on the back end; you can safely save and close the editor page at this time. You should see your video appear in the survey editor within a few minutes to review via playback.

All video clips uploaded to your account will be stored and available to you in a drop down list so that you don't have to upload them again. This is helpful for use in follow-up studies; however, images are not saved on the server, and need to be uploaded each time you want to use them.

Video questions can have a skip logic destination. Use the rabbit icon to program this logic.

A caption for the clip must be added in the question field to launch a survey. If you prefer not to add a caption, simply type a placeholder phrase such as "Please watch the following video".

Special settings for this question include:

  • Allow replaying any time within the survey. By default, respondents can watch the video only one time, and they lose access to it upon advancing to the next question. By using this option, you enable respondents to watch the video again by giving them a shortcut to replay the clip; they may use it at any time during their survey session after the video was presented to them.
